    NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that pursuant to section 87(2) of the Local Government Act 1972 a casual vacancy has arisen in the Office of Councillor for the said Parish.

    If by 21 May 2024 (14 days excluding Dies Non, after the date of this notice) a request for an election to fill the vacancy is made in writing to the Returning Officer, North Yorkshire Council, County Hall, Northallerton, DL7 8AD by TEN electors for the said Parish, an election will be held to fill the said vacancy, otherwise the vacancy will be filled by co-option.

    BURN BIG LUNCH 2024 – SUNDAY 2 JUNE – 3pm onwards in the marquee on The Wheatsheaf car park – BBQ served from 4pm
    A chance to get together with friends and neighbours from the village
    Thanks to Jo and Andy at The Wheatsheaf, local supermarkets and Burn Parish Council,  the BBQ (including meat-free options), bread buns and relishes will be provided for you.
    Just bring sides or desserts to share! In return, a donation from you on the day for this
    year’s chosen charity ‘The Clothing Bank’ – nominated by Keir Mather MP who switched our Christmas lights in December 2023 – would be much appreciated.

    There’s live music courtesy of members of Selby Community Choir –
    SONGS FROM THE SHOWS – from 3.30pm – so be ready to sing along!
    And maybe some games, a quiz etc. – ideas welcome!
    Don’t forget to bring picnic chairs (we can’t provide enough for all!),  plates and cutlery!

  • UKRAINE: local charity hero Stuart Davison is hoping to attend the Big Lunch to meet and thank residents for their support over the last couple of years – he is going one more time on 10 June and is looking to take bandages, tourniquets, first aid kits, sanitary products, dried food, energy drinks and bars, tinned soups and sweets – all for the orphanage.

CHRISTMAS COMES TO BURN

Burn celebrated twice this year – with an official lights switch-on AND a Santa sleigh tour

Santa’s tour, with Paula Marie, The Vintage Vocalist, providing a medley of carols and popular Christmas songs, raised over £145 for The Clothing Bank charity.

Parish Council chairman Chris Phillipson said: “While we celebrated our first official ‘switch-on’ since lockdown on the village green this year, the sleigh tour is still much appreciated and brings Christmas right to people’s doors.

Selby’s new MP Keir Mather performed the Christmas lights switch-on in the village on Saturday (December 2). It was his first official Christmas lights event since being elected.

Mr Mather visited the Christmas Tree Festival in Burn Chapel where he was entertained by members of Selby Community Choir before he joined locals at the village green for the lights ceremony.

He was welcomed by Burn Parish Council chairman Chris Phillipson and presented with the traditional ‘freedom of the village’ golden key and scroll.

Mr Mather said: “I am deeply honoured to be asked to switch on Burn’s Christmas lights. I have visited this village many times and have always found it a very friendly place with an amazing sense of community.

“I also feel very honoured to be joining some illustrious names in the Burn Lights Hall of Fame – people such as Jean Alexander (Hilda Ogden in Coronation Street), the BBC’s late Harry Gration, York panto legend Berwick Kaler as well as a number of ‘local heroes’ from the police, fire, ambulance and postal services.”

A collection was held for The Clothing Bank, nominated by Mr Mather to be Burn’s charity during 2024.

Cadets attend Remembrance: 

Cadets dig in for Burn

A group from the RAF Section of the Combined Cadet Force from the Read School at Drax, began tidying Burn ‘village green’ on September 14 as part of their commitment to be of service and engage with local communities.

Under the supervision of Pilot Office Annette Oliver, OC RAF Section, five cadets began clearing weeds and grass around the memorials and plan a repaint of the metal benches and some new planting in due course.

Burn Parish Council chairman Chris Phillipson said: “We were delighted to be approached by The Read School with the offer of work on the memorials, as, besides regular grass cutting, upkeep is down to village volunteers. It was also pleasing to see some residents helping out as well – a good mix of young and older working side-by-side.”

For the school, Annette said: “This project is part of the Read School’s CCF aim to promote teamwork, leadership and service to others and it is an added bonus that Burn Airfield and the memorials have such strong RAF connections. The cadets thoroughly enjoyed the work and listening to the fascinating stories they were told about Burn of yesteryear.”

BURN BIG CORONATION LUNCH – SUNDAY 7th MAY – 3pm

Well done again, Burn! So far we’ve raised £710 for Ukraine from our Coronation Big Lunch.

We had around 150 people at The Wheatsheaf  to celebrate King Charles III’s coronation and our twelfth annual Big Lunch. Andy and Jo’s BBQ was a great success, the weather was glorious, and attendees got to play some games, take part in the quiz and just relax with neighbours, family and friends – all in a very good cause.

DID YOU SEE THEM???

Burn’s Easter bunnies were out and about on Easter Sunday morning – delivering activity books to our village juniors and ‘grow your own sunflowers’ to every household.

The sunflowers are the first step in our revamped Burn in Bloom garden festival/competition. We’re reorganising it to blend the traditional categories with some new ones to hopefully encourage new entrants….watch this space for info!

HELP FOR UKRAINE : Stuart and Mitch are now safely home – with a particular message of thanks from Sister Julie at the orphanage, where most of Burn’s aid was delivered. She said she was overwhelmed by people’s generosity.

Stuart is planning another trip probably at the beginning of June, with a focus on taking particularly requested items to Sister Julie and helping them dig a well, as there is no running water at the monastery where they are based.
We’ll be publicising what’s needed and where and when it can be delivered in due course.

BURN METHODIST CHAPEL –

CAROL SERVICE: thanks to all who attended – particularly the children – we raised around £130 for Action for Children.

AUTUMN FAIR  Thanks to all who attended – stallholders, volunteers and visitors – we raised  £213  for the chapel. And a big ‘thank you’ to everyone who attended/helped at the MacmIllan Coffee Morning – we raised £250.

BURN CHRISTMAS 2022 – we’ve raised over £1700 for NHS staff !

The Santa sleigh ride at Christmas 2021 raised £395, our ‘Big Jubilee Lunch’ in June ’22 brought in a whopping £823 and our most recent Santa sleigh ride plus the pub bottle totalled £395.
The money will be donated to NHS staff through the Healthcare Workers’ Foundation at a handover later in March 20213. Thanks to everyone for a marvellous effort!

BURN IN BLOOM: Our official 50th garden competition was judged on Monday 25 July by District Councillor Chris Pearson assisted by Burn Parish Councillor Eileen Boldan and Clerk Mary Farman.

First prize went to Brian and Freda Young, second to John and Denise Atkinson and third to Don Green.

The Wheatsheaf pub won the silver salver for best hanging baskets and Burn Chapel, Chris and Andrea Phillipson, Gill Howard and John and Jill Houston were awarded ‘highly commended’ certificates.

Tribute to Harry Gration

Burnflew its Union flag at half mast following the death of broadcaster Harry Gration, who served as our ‘honorary mayor’.

Harry was elected ‘mayor’ in 2009 when he performed Burn’s Christmas lights switch-on. He followed the late Jean Alexander – Hilda Ogden of ‘ Coronation Street’ – who was honorary mayoress the year before.

A message of condolence was to Harry’s widow and family from the village.
